Te Peka Lookout

This viewpoint located atop Hospital Hill at the end of Byers Avenue, offers sweeping views of the city and the countryside beyond. The overlook is accessible by an excellent route that requires a 15-minute climb through the forest (or you may drive there for a simpler trip!).

Te Maire Track

This loop trail typically takes approximately 2 hours to complete and explores just a small section of the expansive 420-hectare reserve. This walk is suitable for individuals of all ages and involves crossing a stream near the beginning of the track. Te Maire Stream meanders through the reserve, usually offering a shallow crossing that won't leave your feet damp. However, be cautious as heavy rain can cause a swift rise in water levels. Please take care and monitor the weather conditions. The path guides you along stream terraces, gradually ascending through a stunning, ancient forest before reaching a ridgeline. From there, it gently loops back to the initial stream crossing. A restroom facility is conveniently located near the beginning of the trail. It is advisable to wear sturdy walking shoes for the journey.

While navigating the track, keep your senses attuned to the diverse array of native forest birds, including the melodious tūī, the agile kārearea (falcon), the vibrant korimako (bellbird), and the charismatic toutouwau (robin).
