Kia Ora. Welcome to Ruapehu

Family Friendly Rides

Packed with family friendly cycle trails, the Ruapehu region boasts easier rides for those with less experience, while still having enough undulating variation to satisfy the more adventurous in the bunch.

Jubilee walkway - Ohakune

Anchored by the Giant Carrot at the Southeastern end of Ohakune township, the 1.5km Jubilee Walkway winds its way through native bush, making an easy undulating ride. Suitable for all ages, the track follows the Mangateitei Stream through a beautiful scenic reserve to finish at Burns Street at the southwestern end of town. You can easily link up with the southern end of the Mangawhero River Trail and add the riverside ride up to the base of the mountain road.

Mangawhero River Trail - Ohakune

Probably the most accessible track in Ohakune, this scenic 2km riverside walk/cycleway will take you from the Junction end of Ohakune to the town proper (the trail can also be ridden in the other direction), presenting the option to link up to the Jubilee Walkway. Following the natural meander of the Mangawhero river, the well-maintained track makes the most of the beautiful waterway with an easy, family-friendly ride. The swing bridge over the river at the halfway point makes for a fun landmark and gives the option to cut the track shorter if those little legs are getting tired. Pushing on however can be worth it, as the southern half of the trail pops in and out of the light forest to reveal picturesque picnic spots and swimming holes.

Te Pepe Bike Park and Pump track - Ohakune

Built by generous community volunteers, the Te Pepe Bike Park and Pump Track is an adrenaline-filled circuit with options for beginners right through to expert riders. Featuring a series of rollers and berms, the pump track is designed to teach riders to maintain momentum on their bikes without pedalling (or to catch some air if that's your goal). Enjoyed by all ages and ability levels, the pump track is easily accessed at the end of the Mangawhero River trail, on Old Station Road, in the Junction, Ohakune.

Fishers Track - National Park Village

With wide-open views of the mountains after a short climb through the Erua forest, you can cruise or crank this 17km stretch of mostly downhill farm track. Perfect for riders with little experience, Fishers Track is also part of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. The trailhead starts behind the railway station in National Park Village and is a family-friendly 2 to 3-hour ride.

Marton Sash & Door Tramway - National Park Village

A 16km easy family-friendly loop trail following a recovered bush tramway route and backcountry dirt roads and a pine plantation steeped in history and following the main trunk line.

Tongariro River Trail - Turangi

With numerous picnic and swimming spots to cool off during the hot summer months, the Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing 15km loop that follows the banks of the beautiful Tongariro River near Turangi. You will ride through pockets of native New Zealand forest, mature beech, manuka and fern groves on this lightly undulating Grade 2 trail. Popular with young families and beginner riders, the trail is brimming with scenic value and can be ridden in all weather conditions and there are many entry points to the trail so you can make it shorter to suit. Follow the ride up with a soak at the Tokaanu Hot Springs.
