Embarking on
this journey around the towering volcanic giants of Central North Island,
you'll traverse the expansive high central plateau, treated to unobstructed
vistas of Mount Ngauruhoe, Tongariro, and Ruapehu. As
you continue, you'll pass through untouched wilderness forests, cut through by
the majestic Whanganui River.
Starting your southbound adventure from TaupÅ, and head westward at Turangi, following State Highway 47 to reach National Park Village as you enjoy the breathtaking views of sacred mountain peaks and otherworldly landscapes. Stop in at Whakapapa Ski Area and take a trip on the iconic Sky Waka gondola, and be sure to check out the awesome hiking trails while you're there.
Proceed south to Ohakune via State Highway 49 and continue to Waiouru. Along the way make sure you stop and cycle the iconic Ohakune Old Coach Road, head to the Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park, and visit the world-class National Army Museum in Waiouru.
From there,
head northward back to Turangi, thus completing the loop, all while the
majestic backdrop of the UNESCO Dual World Heritage Tongariro
National Park site of cultural and natural significance graces your
journey.
