Tongariro National Park

Situated in the middle of the North Island, and covering almost 80,000 hectares, the Tongariro National Park UNESCO World Heritage site presents awe-inspiring landscapes and diverse terrain easily accessible from a variety of neighbouring towns.

The Tongariro National Park is easy to access

Getting to the park is easy, with good quality roads surrounded by stunning scenery to enjoy along the way. The starting point of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, as well as the Whakapapa Ski Area at Mount Ruapehu, are both 20 to 35mins from National Park Village, 45mins to 1hr from Ohakune, Turangi or Taumarunui and between 1hr20 and 1hr35 from Lake Taupō township. Whakapapa Village is right in the action, just 8 mins to the ski area, and also nicely located from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing just 35 minutes away by car.

The Tongariro National Park is most famous for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the large ski fields of Whakapapa and Tūroa located at Mount Ruapehu. There are a plethora of other activities in and around the park available all year round.

You can use the Tongariro Crossing shuttle bus transport to access the starting point of the hike easily.

Walk the Tongariro Crossing or, for seasoned adventurers, tackle the Round the Mountain track in Tongariro which offers diverse volcanic landscapes and alpine vegetation while staying in huts overnight amidst the rugged beauty of Mount Ruapehu.
