2025 Wave Start Times

Start Format:
The Goat Alpine Adventure Run begins at the top of Bruce Road, with participants released in staggered waves to preserve the pristine Tongariro National Park environment and enhance the runner experience. The first wave (1A) starts at 9:00 am, with the final wave (6C) departing at 9:54 am. The staggered release spans 54 minutes.

Wave assignments are based on submitted times for a flat road half marathon and previous Goat event performance data. Wave 1A includes the fastest athletes expected to contend for overall victory.

If you believe you have a strong chance of winning the overall event, contact the organisers to request placement in Wave 1A (if not already assigned). Note that age category winners are determined by net time, so your starting wave does not impact your age category placement. Participants must be 16 years or older on event day.

Event Overview:

Cut-Off Points:

  1. Cut-Off #1 – 6.3km Mark (11:29 am):
Participants must reach the 6.3km checkpoint within 1 hour 35 minutes of their wave start. For example, Wave 6C participants must arrive by 11:29 am. Those unable to meet this time will be turned around and escorted to Bruce Road, where transport will take them to the finish area. Participants who miss this cut-off will receive a "Did Not Finish" (DNF) in their timing results.

  2. Cut-Off #2 – Finish Line (4:29 pm):
The finish line cut-off is 6.5 hours after Wave 6C starts. Entrants who do not reach the finish line by 4:29 pm will be marked as DNF in the official results. Participants exiting the track after 4:29 pm may be allowed to complete the course on the road, subject to traffic management approval, but will not officially complete the event.

Important Notes:

  • This is a challenging alpine run requiring prior preparation.
  • Ensure you can meet the pace required to reach each cut-off point.
  • The event prioritises the safety and experience of all participants while preserving the stunning natural environment of Mt Ruapehu.
