Visitors and communities across the Central Plateau are encouraged to connect with, care for, and celebrate the natural wonders on their doorstep this summer.
Mahi Aroha, an initiative by Project Tongariro and the Department of Conservation, offers an array of nature-focused activities perfect for the whole family. Bookings are now open for an exciting lineup of events happening in January!
Kiri Te Wano, Chief Executive of Project Tongariro, explains that Mahi Aroha is about fostering a love for our unique environment.
“We’re fortunate to live in such an extraordinary part of the world. These events inspire us to get outdoors and truly value it,” she says.
With nearly 30 events scheduled, stretching from Taupō to Ohakune and everywhere in between, DOC and Project Tongariro are teaming up with community groups to deliver an unforgettable summer program.
New this year, don’t miss the Te Onetapu Rangipo Desert hike or an exhilarating ride along the Great Lake Trail from Waihaha to Waihora.
Returning favourites include the Okupata Caves tour, predator trap-building workshops, and Kiwi aversion training, providing hands-on ways to contribute to conservation efforts.
